The Novas

Honouring Our Fallen

The Novas and Dartmouth Whalers Unite in Remembrance

Prior to Saturday afternoon's Nova Scotia U15 Major Hockey League game between The Novas and Dartmouth Whalers at the Antigonish Arena, both organizations came together in a solemn tribute to four Canadian Armed Forces soldiers who tragically lost their lives during a military training exercise at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, Alberta, on October 17, 2026.

The tragedy claimed the lives of four Canadian soldiers:

  • Sergeant Morgan Wong

  • Private Shaun Farrell

  • Private Aidan Goulding

  • Private Hayden Lykkemark

The incident also left numerous Canadian Armed Forces members injured.

Before the opening faceoff, our game announcer delivered a heartfelt tribute honouring the fallen soldiers and acknowledging the sacrifices made by those who serve our country.

As a symbol of unity and respect, Novas Captain Nole Romard and Dartmouth Whalers Captain Andy Chipp stood together at centre ice, proudly holding the Canadian flag while players, coaches, officials, and spectators observed a moment of silence.

For those few moments, the competition between two hockey teams gave way to something far more important: a shared expression of remembrance, gratitude, and respect.

At The Novas, we believe our responsibility extends beyond developing hockey players. We strive to develop strong community citizens who understand the importance of respect, compassion, and honouring those who serve others.

Saturday's tribute was a meaningful reminder that some things are far greater than the game itself.

The Nova Elite Hockey Development Association extends its deepest condolences to the families, friends, and fellow service members of the four fallen soldiers. Our thoughts remain with those injured in the tragedy and everyone affected by this devastating loss.

We will remember them.

The Novas Announce 2026–2027 Leadership Group

The Novas are proud to announce their leadership group for the 2026–2027 Nova Scotia U15 Major Hockey League season.

Nole Romard has been named team captain, while Alex Dan MacDonnell, Liam Duggan, and John Purcell will serve as assistant captains.

The four players were officially introduced as the team's leadership group, taking on an important responsibility as The Novas begin another season of U15 Major hockey.

Being selected to wear a letter is an honour that extends well beyond performance on the ice. It represents the trust of the coaching staff and the responsibility to lead by example through hard work, commitment, accountability, and respect for teammates, coaches, opponents, and the game itself.

The Novas have long placed an emphasis on developing more than hockey players. Building strong character, responsible teammates, and positive representatives of our communities remains an important part of the program's philosophy.

As members of the leadership group, Romard, MacDonnell, Duggan, and Purcell will be expected to help establish and maintain those standards, support their teammates, and contribute to a positive, team-first environment throughout the season.

Leadership is not simply about wearing a letter on a jersey. It is about the example you set every day, both on and off the ice.

The Novas congratulate all four players on their appointments and look forward to their leadership throughout the 2026–2027 season.

New season. New group. Same standard.
